…better and better!
Another milestone has been added to the transfer market statistics. All Iceland national team matches are now available in our database. The most successful goalscorers in Icelandic history have come from a duo: Eidur Gudjohnsen and Kolbeinn Sigthórsson, each scoring 26 goals for their home country. Former, long-time Augsburg professional Alfred Finnbogason, whose contract with FCA expired at the end of June, is also in the top 5.
The current captain, Birkir Bjarnason, tops the list of players with the most appearances. The attacking midfielder has made 100 appearances for the islanders so far. With Rúnar Kristinsson (104 games) and Birkir Már Saevarsson (103), two other professionals have surpassed the 100-game mark.
The biggest success in the island nation’s football history is reaching the quarter-finals at Euro 2016, when the selection could celebrate victories against Austria and England before eventual finalists France were too strong (2-5). The first duel ever was played by Iceland against Denmark, which ended 0:3. The Danes also suffered the heaviest defeat, beating the Icelanders 14-2 on August 23, 1967.
