…better and better!
Another milestone has been added to the transfer market statistics. All Norway national team matches are now available in our database. In total, the “lions” played 869 international matches since the first official meeting against Sweden in July 1908, which they lost 3:11. The neighboring country is Norway’s most frequent opponent with 107 duels to date. Overall, around a third of all international matches have been played against Scandinavian countries.
The Norwegians’ favorite opponent is Cyprus: All eleven international matches against the island nation have been won. The situation is different for Belgium (nine duels) and the Soviet Union (eight duels + four against the Olympic team), against whom Norway has never (yet) been able to win. Remarkable: Norway has remained unbeaten in four matches against five-time world champions Brazil and has won twice – for example at the 1998 World Cup, when the third participation after 1938 reached the round of 16 for the second time.

In the 1990s to 2000, the “Lions” had their best phase with two World Cup participations and the only European Championship qualification so far. This generation still has an influence today: Stale Solbakken (national coach), Sigurd Rushfeldt (assistant) and Frode Grodas (goalkeeping coach) form the current coaching staff of the Norwegian national team, which is also peppered with sons of former national players such as Kristian Thorstvedt, Erling Haaland and Alexander Sörloth is.
The current team is led by only 23-year-old Martin Ødegaard. In August 2014, at the age of 15 years, eight months and ten days, today’s captain became the youngest debutant to date in Norway dress. It remains to be seen whether Odegaard will be able to match the record 110 appearances set by Liverpool icon John Arne Riise (2000 to 2013). The offensive player is currently in 39 international matches. The decades-old goal record of Jörgen Juve (1928 to 1937), who scored 33 goals in 45 appearances, is likely to shake in a few years. BVB striker Haaland netted 15 times in 17 international matches, if the quota were to be maintained, the 21-year-old would catch up with Juve in almost 20 international matches.
