Title holder Krejcíková in first round Roland Garros down against French talent | NOW

Barbora Krejcíková has already been eliminated in the first round at Roland Garros. The Czech title holder lost on Monday despite an energetic start in three sets to French talent Diane Parry.

The 26-year-old Krejcíková went down in a match of more than two hours in the covered Court Philippe Chatrier. The number two in the world won the first set with 1-6, after which she was surprised by Parry in the two following sets with 6-2 and 6-3.

Parry finished it off on her first match point with a forehand that proved too powerful for last year’s champion. The young Frenchwoman raised both her arms in the air, a little stunned, in front of the frenzied crowd in Paris.

Nineteen-year-old Parry is the world number 97. She already participated in Roland Garros three years ago and then won her match in the first round at the age of sixteen. During the past two editions, she lost in the opening round.

Krejcíková surprisingly took the title in Paris last year. In the final she was too strong in three sets for Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is missing from Roland Garros this year due to a knee injury.

Earlier in the day, Naomi Osaka also stranded in the first round of the clay tournament in Paris. The four-time Grand Slam winner lost in straight sets to American Amanda Anisimova.
