The Italian Jonathan Milan won the fourth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico long-distance cycling trip.
On the 207 km long fourth section of the Italian long-distance cycling trip, the Italian Jonathan Milan from the Lidl-Trek team caught up on Thursday (March 7th, 2024). Thanks to the time credit, Milan also secured the lead in the overall standings.
The Belgian sprint star Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) came second ahead of the Australian Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech). The Norwegian Jonas Abrahamsen, part of the three-man breakaway group that characterized the final phase of the race, was only caught by the sprint experts on the home straight.
Exceptional talent Ayuso loses the overall lead
Spain’s exceptional talent Juan Ayuso lost the overall lead to Milan, although he had crossed the finish line with the peloton. The 21-year-old from UAE Team Emirates didn’t let a defect just under 30 km from the finish bother him.
Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard also crossed the finish line with the peloton. The top favorite will not face any of his presumably biggest tour rivals in his first tough test of the year. While Tadej Pogacar is taking a break after his impressive triumph at the Strade Bianche, the new Bora Hansgrohe captain Primoz Roglic and the Belgian Remco Evenepoel are taking part in the Paris-Nice stage race, which is taking place at the same time.
Mayrhofer best German, Bauhaus not in the top ten
Marius Mayrhofer was the best German in a good sixth place. Top German sprinter Phil Bauhaus didn’t make it into the top ten the day after his first stage win.
The difficult stage is on Friday with the climb to San Giacomo. The long-distance journey ends on Sunday in San Benedetto del Tronto.
