Tips for a healthy spring garden: ‘Pruning with sharp blades’

Spring has officially started and due to the beautiful weather, many people are diving into the garden to get started. But what is sensible to do now and what is better to wait a little longer? The agendas of many gardeners are overcrowded and so you will have to roll up your sleeves yourself. We went on the road with gardening company Vincent van Loenen for a few handy tips, so that you can work professionally yourself.

Due to the beautiful weather, many people are eager to work in the garden again, but according to Van Loenen there are a number of things you should pay attention to first. “Think, for example, of pruning too early or scarifying the grass too early.” By this he means that the dead thatch and the moss must first be removed from the grass with a sharp rake. “But this should only be done from mid-April. Then it is warm enough at night to allow it to recover properly.”

The gardener also talks about the importance of sharp knives when pruning. “When the blades are sharp, the cut on the pruned branches is more beautiful,” explains Van Loenen. “This means you have less chance of diseases. And around this time of the year you especially have to prune the perennials. But don’t clean up everything, leave the small twigs for the birds. They build a nest with them.”
