Ottorino Respighi will forever remain inextricably linked to the symphonic poems known as the Roman Trilogy. However, there is much more by his hand, and lately singers are turning to his songs more often.
He was not interested in 20th-century innovations such as atonality and twelve-tone series, but in his songs you can hear how Respighi managed to master each musical tradition. Tenor Timothy Fallon and pianist Ammiel Busshakevitz, like two style chameleons, bring out the variety in his art of song, from the graceful lyricism in the Cinque canti all’antica to the popular sincerity in his Scottish songs.
Fallon has a sweet voice and phrases very elegantly, but can play like an opera hero if necessary, as in the desperate in alto mare† Busshakevitz knows exactly when to conjure an impressionistic haze around Fallon’s voice and when to step forward himself. An extremely captivating recital.
