Timo Werner played his first game for Tottenham. His new coach is thrilled with him – and couldn’t have imagined the transfer.
National player Timo Werner made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur. The striker, on loan from RB Leipzig, played from the start and prepared Rodrigo Bentancur’s second Tottenham goal in the 2-2 (1-2) draw against English record champions Manchester United (46th minute).
The 27-year-old played on the left offensive flank for South Korean Son Heung-min, who was at the Asian Cup. Werner had Spurs’ first chance with his header (11th minute). Shortly before the break a shot went just past the post (45′). Werner was substituted after 80 minutes.
Tottenham coach: “I was very excited”
The international moved to the North London club last week on loan until the end of the season. He made his last appearance in the Premier League on May 7, 2022 in the Chelsea FC jersey. Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou spoke about his new signing before the game: “It’s fair to say that if Timo played regularly and scored goals, he wouldn’t be here.”
And further: “We would not have been able to sign him,” said Postecoglou. The coach was pleased about the signing despite Werner’s previously disappointing season with little playing time and lack of success: “When I was told about the possibility of getting him, I was very excited.” This is an opportunity “that we don’t normally have in this phase,” explained Postecoglou.
