Tahmina was clearly visibly emotional as she told her story. She spoke about the future plans she had with Peter and the impact his murder has on her. “It took me a long time to find words that can describe the pain. I’ll give it a try. I’ve learned that words, although they can do a lot, are not able to express it,” Tahmina began her story.
Tahmina Akefi’s world collapsed
Peter and Tahmina turned out to have big plans for the future. “After the trip to Berlin we would go to Croatia. To continue working on a book about our love. (…) A book would really immortalize love.” She also spoke about Peter’s last moments. “The steps he took on July 6 at 7:28 PM were to bring him to me. Instead, he ended up in the hospital. My world came crashing down when I heard that Peter had been shot.”
The love for Peter R. was immense, so was the grief
What she then found in the hospital, she said, was ‘too unreal and too devastating’. “I wonder how I can ever cope with this loss. (…) They say that the grief for the loss of someone is as great as the love you felt for someone. The love was immense, so was the sorrow.”
It takes guts to talk
Tahmina was also clear about the terrible text messages that the suspects sent to each other in which things were said such as ‘you must have this dog’ and ‘leave him there like a slut’. “In ten, twenty or thirty years, they will still feel like salt on an open wound. Time does not heal all wounds. (…) The pain becomes part of your life. But it never gets less. Any idiot can pull the trigger, it turns out. But to talk, it takes guts.”
