Tim van Rijthoven had to give up in the second round of a challenger tournament in the American city of Indianapolis. The tennis player from Roosendaal was ahead in his match against American Ben Shelton, but he was unable to continue playing due to a sore back.
Van Rijthoven had won the first set in the tiebreak. In the second set, the 25-year-old Roosendaler led 2-1 in games when he had to retire.
The tennis player has had a successful grass season. He won the Rosmalen grass tournament and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. In it he went down against the later winner, the Serb Novak Djokovic.
World ranking
Van Rijthoven lost last week in Newport in the first round to American Mitchell Krueger. In the world ranking of last Monday, Van Rijthoven is in place 101.
A challenger tournament is an international tennis tournament for men, set up by the ATP. The tournaments have been created to allow players to earn enough points to be able to compete at a higher level. Getting a lot of points in these tournaments will make it easier for you to access tournaments in higher tiers.
