Tim den Besten refuses to join Op1: ‘Invited’

Tim den Besten refused to join Op1 last night, where it was extensively about his controversial Sinterklaas song. “He’s been invited to sit here.”

VPRO star Tim den Besten has been almost canceled because of singing a line from a Sinterklaas song. He has cried on national radio and apologized and that has stirred up a lot of people. It was therefore extensively discussed in Op1, which captivated 665 thousand viewers (19 percent market share).

Op1 about Tim

Three guests sat at the table to talk about Tim and his Sinterklaas song: opinion maker Zihni Özdil, publicist Sujet Shams and philosopher Floris van den Berg.

Actually, Tim was supposed to sit at the table himself, but he didn’t want that. “Of course we invited Tim and everyone who was involved, but they all did not want to,” said presenter Welmoed Sijtsma.

Co-host Jort Kelder made it clear at the end of the broadcast what he thinks about it all: “Tomorrow you have to do it again with two white people. Yes sorry it is no different.”

‘I want to lose something’

Tim posted a statement on his Instagram yesterday. “I know and feel that the song I have sung is no longer possible. Saturday it went completely wrong and I blurted it out thoughtlessly. I’m ashamed that I did that and I’m sorry I hurt people with it.”

He continues: “Precisely because I try to be an ally for the black community and other minorities, and I have been in favor of abolishing Zwarte Piet for years. (…) I really appreciate that Kick Out Zwarte Piet first edited the erroneous post with disinformation and later removed it completely, and has now also apologized.”

Caroline van der Plas was also watching Op1 last night. It only then became clear to her that Tim’s emotional outburst was no joke: “Until tonight I seriously thought that the fake crying (without tears!) on NPO Radio 1 by Tim den Besten was satire. I only now understand that this was meant seriously. Man oh man…”
