Tim Burton is working with Gillian Flynn on the new version of the science fiction film.
Tim Burton will direct a remake of the 1958 film Attack of the 20-Meter Woman. The aim is to create a “redesign” of the old science fiction film.
The absurd stories of Tim Burton
As the title suggests, it’s about a plus-sized woman. After growing from extraterrestrial radiation, the film’s protagonist sets out to punish her cheating husband and his lover. For Tim Burton, who is known from “Edward Scissorhands” (1990), “Beetlejuice” (1988) or most recently the series “Wednesday” (2022), the remake of such a bizarre plot would not be a novelty. He captured the atmosphere of fifties science fiction in “Mars Attacks” (1996). However, Gillian Flynn is at his side for “Attack of the 20 Meter Woman”. She is actually known for her thrillers like “Gone Girl”, for whose film adaptations she often writes the scripts. It remains to be seen whether and what changes the two will make to the template.
Here is the trailer for the fifties original:
“Attack of the 20 Meter Woman”: Nineties remake
They wouldn’t be the first: in 1993 there was already a remake of “Attack of the 20 Meter Woman” (originally: “Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman”). The HBO television film psychologizes the huge protagonist more strongly and thus portrays her less as a hysterical evil. The film also brings with it the change that the husband’s mistress is spared. Instead, the betrayed person gives her some good advice. Unlike in the original, the couple doesn’t die, but they are taken away by aliens.
The Hollywood news magazine “Deadline” suspects another “female-power event project” through the collaboration of Warner Bros., which worked on “Barbie” last year.
