Tim (14) delivers fresh eggs in Oosterheem: ‘This deserves better than a newspaper route’

In the Eilandenbuurt in Oosterheem, fresh eggs are delivered to more than 100 households every week. The 14-year-old Tim Segers has an egg district there and delivers 1,100 eggs to people’s homes with his cart. “A customer once gave me homemade waffles made with my eggs.”

Tim is the first seller in Zoetermeer to deliver eggs from the company Egg Sellent. “When I was twelve I wanted to earn some extra money so I took a paper route.” He earned 5 euros a week, but the young entrepreneur believed he could earn more.

First egg district in Zoetermeer

His cousin from Rotterdam had been working for Egg-Sellent for some time and saved quite a bit of pocket money. “I asked if they were already active in Zoetermeer, but they weren’t. They said they would think about it and in the meantime I continued with my newspaper route. Until one day I got a call that an egg district could be built in Zoetermeer. After an introductory meeting I was able to start immediately.”

Forty eggs because of sports

His face and name were printed on flyers Tim threw in the mailboxes of neighbors. “One day we went door-to-door with someone from the head office with boxes of eggs. Many people were enthusiastic and decided to become customers. Almost half the streets of my Oosterheem Eierwijk buy eggs every week. One wants ten, the other six, but there are also people who order 40 eggs. For example, because of the extra proteins during exercise.”

Bollard cart with egg cartons

On Tuesdays, the eggs are delivered directly from the farmer to the backyard. “I leave the gate open so that the delivery person can put them in the garden. Then I put the eggs in the fridge in the shed and keep the boxes at home. Then the sorting work begins.” On Wednesday and Thursday, Tim walks to his addresses with a fully loaded handcart. “I already had a cart for my newspaper route, so I now use it for the egg cartons. I ring the doorbell of all customers and if no one is home, I come back at a later time. You can pay by pin and I will take the empty boxes back with me.”

Super tasty waffles

As an egg delivery person, you can’t help but love eggs, right? “I don’t eat that many”, says Tim, “but I do like an egg every now and then. I like an omelette or a fried egg. Some customers sometimes order extra eggs because they are going to bake a cake, for example. And a customer once made fresh waffles with my eggs in them. I was given a few waffles in aluminum foil to taste. They were really really tasty.”

His sister sometimes pulls the cart

In addition to the higher earnings, Tim finds selling and delivering eggs much more fun than a newspaper route. “I like meeting people and having a chat every now and then. The work can be easily combined with my studies at Alfrink College. Sometimes people come out of their houses to ask if they can order eggs too. The more eggs I sell, the more I earn from a box.” Sometimes Tim’s sister helps pull the cart or hand over the eggs. “That’s very handy,” says Tim. “I’ll give her 2 euros an hour.”
