Vincent Heilmann normally sits on the bench at VfL Wolfsburg as an assistant coach. It can be strange: on Sunday he actually leads a match of the German Bundesliga team and that at the age of 25. “I’m going to enjoy it,” he says in the Omroep Brabant radio program De Zuidtribune.
Heilmann is the assistant coach, but because head coach Florian Kohfeldt and the first assistant Michael Frontzeck cannot attend the game (disabled by corona and surgery, respectively), it is now up to the Tilburger to lead the team. His team will play against Augsburg on Sunday afternoon from half past three.
‘No own choices’
He led all the training sessions last week. “That was very nice. I had a very nice week. But yes, the head coach is of course still involved. It is not as if I now make my own choices and can decide for myself.”
Heilmann therefore tries to remain sober during his debut. “I was told on Monday that the coach was positive. Then I started thinking about the game. I’m going to enjoy it, but the most important thing is that we get three points.”
‘Not been a problem’
According to Heilmann, not much will change for him. After all, he already had a relationship with many players, because he is an assistant. “The players respect me. They trust me. That hasn’t been a problem at all over the past week.”
