Almost two years ago, in the middle of August, TikTok announced the opening of this first data center in Europe. At the time, the social network said that the objective of this implementation was to “play a key role in strengthening the safeguard and protection of TikTok user data, with a state-of-the-art physical and network security defense system”. Obviously, this is also a way for ByteDance, parent company of TikTok, to prove that it is trustworthy.

The social network accelerates its development in Europe, with new offices and new markets

TikTok had also chosen Dublin to open its trust and safety center for the EMEA zone. The company initially promised an opening of the European data center for the beginning of the year 2022. It was missed. The hosting of European user data in this Irish center will start in early 2023, “with a rise in power throughout the year”, according to TikTok. The social network specifies that the activity of this new data center illustrates “our continued investment in Europe”.

Indeed, TikTok recently announced the opening of new offices in Dublin and London. The colt of ByteDance also continues to strengthen its teams in France, Italy and Spain, and develops its activities in new markets, particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. With the opening of this data center in Ireland, TikTok anticipates the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is entering the final phase of its adoption. Even if Ireland was certainly chosen for tax reasons, the hosting of personal data of Europeans in Ireland should reassure the local authorities.
