TikTok star and musician BECKS: “I try something new every day”

Rebecca Thomalla alias BECKS is fed up with letting the gossip of others spoil her day. In her early 20s, she has now freed herself from some of the constraints of the small town. Today it’s Berlin instead of Düren. Not just because of the music, but also just to be able to be who you really are. With this attitude towards life, BECKS has not only won over 770,000 followers* on TikTok, their first three singles “Chemie”, “Avatar” and “Blutmond” have already reached over five million cross-platform streams after a short time – trend further increasing.

How BECKS took the TikTok community by storm

In early 2020, BECKS began posting acting and lipsync performances on the video platform TikTok. The community liked that and asked more and more often that they should write their own songs. That’s how the track “Chemie” came about one night, which she published as a snippet on TikTok. A courageous step, also because it marked her public coming out. The lyrics say: “What’s so wrong with loving a woman instead of a man / I’d hurt you if you knew how many times I’ve suffered because of it.”

The reactions on the internet are overwhelming: With over 9,000 creations, the snippet is going viral – today she receives daily messages in which people describe their personal experiences and how much the music of BECKS helps them: “Every participant in our society struggles with all sorts of issues on a daily basis, and many have everyday, ongoing disputes with themselves — but amidst all the chaos, one should never forget that one is never alone with one’s problems,” the singer said. “Perhaps the greatest idol, the greatest celebrity has very similar problems and concerns in life. If we all start talking more openly about our problems and thoughts, that would be a huge step and would equally empower not only individuals but our society as well.”

BECKS: Experimentation is important

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past few years, it’s that you should never pretend to adapt to a situation – even if it sometimes seems like the easier way,” says BECKS. This also applies 100 percent to their music. “I’m not afraid to try things – create, discard and revise. A few months ago I would never have thought that I would release some kind of love song and yet the new track ‘ZU GUT’ gives me the opportunity to approach the topic differently and bring my own message both lyrically and visually.”

“ZU GUT” is BECKS’ first feature single – it was created together with Bevn and sounds like this:

She herself is no longer interested in what others think of her. “I try something new every day, including with my looks. I actually have short hair and usually dress masculine, simply because I like it. But sometimes I have days when I put on a wig and a dress,” says BECKS.

My focus over the last few years has definitely been to surround yourself with good energy and not get involved with the negative. If you stick to this and never stop dreaming, the greatest adventures can happen. For me, this positive energy is by far the most valuable.
