The Football Association of England (FA) has announced heightened security measures to prevent any disruption ahead of the Women’s EURO final between England and Germany.
The FA want to avoid scenes similar to last year’s around the sold-out game at London’s Wembley Stadium with 90,000 spectators.
At the men’s European Championship final between England and Italy, riots broke out in front of the stadium when hundreds of chaotic people without tickets tried to gain access to the stadium and were partly successful. In front of the stadium, a high number of police and security forces and a ban on alcohol should ensure order.
“The safety of fans at Wembley Stadium is of paramount importance,” a Wembley spokeswoman told the PA news agency. “We have robust security measures in place before, during and after the event at the stadium.”
The English team, unbeaten in 19 games and still untitled, are in the final of the European Championship for the first time since 2009. At that time, the team lost 6-2 in Helsinki against record European champions Germany. The DFB selection will be contesting their ninth final at Wembley on Sunday and have yet to lose a single one.
