Tiger mosquito spotted in twice as many places in Belgium last year: “Also first positive reports in Brussels and Wallonia”

The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), an invasive species with the potential to transmit viruses, is advancing worryingly quickly in Belgium. In 2023, the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Sciensano registered the presence of this mosquito at twice as many locations in Belgium as the year before. The citizen science platform Mosquito Surveillance plays an important role in this and registered positive reports for the first time in Brussels and Wallonia.
