Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) breaks neck vertebra after collision | Cycling

Benoot has given an update on his injuries on Instagram. “First of all, I want to let everyone know that I’m okay. Yesterday I was involved in an accident in the Italian Alps. I’m now in the hospital and I’m getting good medical care there and I can recover from the crash.”

To continue: ,,The results show that I suffered a small fracture in my cervical vertebra, although I never ended up in a life-threatening situation because of this. I am stable. Thank you everyone for all the sweet messages. In the coming weeks I will be working on my recovery.”

Normally, Benoot would have started the BEMER Cyclassics in Hamburg on August 21, and the Tour of Germany and the Canadian races in Québec and Montréal were also on his program. Almost the entire run-up that his Jumbo-Visma colleague Wout van Aert also takes to the World Cup in Wollongong, Australia. It shouldn’t be for Benoot, though.

The Belgian, who also had an unfortunate fall in the Tour, had to deal with a serious portion of bad luck again on Monday in training. After a collision in training, he is absent for the rest of the season.

The exact details about the accident and his injuries remained private Monday. Benoot was at a training camp in Livigno, Italy, to prepare for the autumn competitions. That went according to plan until he was hit by a car. It was a heavy blow. So Benoot escaped worse consequences.
