A$AP Rocky presents his new album “Don’t Be Dumb” live in Germany. The tour takes A$AP Rocky from North America to Europe, where he will perform in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the Olympiahalle in Munich, the Barclays Arena in Hamburg and the Uber Arena in Berlin. The presale starts tomorrow, Wednesday.
In our review of “Don’t Be Dumb” we wrote: “My fairytale with a happy ending… Truth is I just got struck by Cupid,” he raps on “Stay Here 4 Life,” one of several references to Rihanna. Too often, however, he falls back into his familiar role as a “pretty motherfucker” and delivers endless couplets about hustler status and sexual potency – delivered charismatically but without the linguistic brilliance that characterized earlier uptown stars like Cam’ron or Big L. Still, it sounds like he’s having fun, and at some point he manages to pull the listener along too.
For rap gossip lovers, there’s “Stole Ya Flow,” on which Rocky appears to take shots at former friend Drake. “Stole my flow, so I stole your bitch,” he accuses him (Drake and Rihanna were once publicly in a relationship. Some were offended by Rocky calling Rihanna “his bitch.”) On “No Trespassing” he follows up: “I might move to Texas, roll ’round with protection / Pull up to your section, hit ’em with that fire.” (Drake is reported to have moved to Texas in 2024.)”
Side swipes and self-assertion
“All that smoke may have fueled the rumor mill, but it’s not the most exciting thing about Don’t Be Dumb. What’s more interesting is Rocky’s feeling of being underestimated as a pioneer of modern rap styles. (Critics will argue that much of this was borrowed from cult figures like Lil B, Main Attrakionz and Odd Future.) “These boys gon’ finally give me credit for setting all these trends,” he claims on “Whiskey,” just before Westside Gunn with his “boom-boom-boom-boom-boom!” used. On “Stop Snitchin’,” Rocky references his high-profile trial and acquittal after being accused of threatening former boyfriend A$AP Relli with a gun.
“YGs to OGs, stay fuck up off the interviews / You was just on say cheese, talkin’ like interrogation room,” he raps on the track, which also features controversial Houston rapper Sauce Walka. Overall, these passages seem like the testimony of a multi-platinum award-winning artist who nevertheless believes that he has received too little recognition for his artistic achievements. As Meek Mill once said, there are levels to this game.”
