Felix Nmecha showed a strong game against Curaçao. Afterwards there was a conciliatory moment with the opponent.
Germany’s World Cup opener against Curaçao was also his very own World Cup debut: Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund was allowed to start for the DFB team in defensive midfield – and celebrated a perfect debut.
In the sixth minute, the 25-year-old gave the German team the lead with a remarkable shot. He then created a few more chances to score, but was unable to take advantage of them. In the second half he shone particularly well as a defensive clearer.
While Nmecha fought his opponents intensively during the game and was one of the main reasons why Germany celebrated a clear opening victory with 7-1, he sent a peaceful signal after the final whistle.
Along with Jonathan Tah, Nmecha could be seen standing arm in arm in a circle with some of the Curaçao opponents’ players. On the ARD microphone, he explained what the scene was all about: “We are opponents in the game, but after the game we are all Christians, we are brothers,” said Nmecha. “Then we just did a little prayer together because we are still very grateful,” he continued. “In terms of the result, it’s obviously nice for us, but overall we all believe that Jesus is working solemnly through the game and that’s why we came together and prayed together.”
Nmecha is a deeply devout Christian and a poster boy for “Ballers in God”, the association of evangelical footballers. The circle’s Instagram account viewed Nmecha’s actions as evidence that every glory and every victory belongs to Jesus Christ.
He has already caused offense with his positions in the past. A few years ago, he shared posts on social media that were interpreted as anti-queer. In addition, content shared by right-wing US commentator Matt Walsh and expressions of condolence for the murdered ultra-right US activist Charlie Kirk a few months ago caused the anger of some fans.
