The A-Youth goalkeeper is supposed to lead Borussia Mönchengladbach back to Europe-but Tiago Pereira Cardoso is still in the Abi stress. His start was better than with Manuel Neuer, Oliver Kahn and Bodo Illgner.

When the foals have their next signpost in the fight for international business on Saturday (April 12, 2025, 3:30 p.m.-live in the audio stream at Sportschau.de), a 19-year-old has been in the goal for a few days. Before the game against the table neighbor SC Freiburg, coach Gerardo Seoane has now given up to make a secret that it would also work silly.

Oldie Sippel with new jurisdiction

Although the almost twice as old Tobias Sippel is still there, the captain Jonas Omlin replaced after his red card against Augsburg and looked rather helpless: a 0: 0 became a 0: 3. After that, Sippel’s jurisdiction in the Gladbach goalkeeper team had shifted to make the youngster strong in training with his experience and to give him support before and after the games.

So far, Sippel has succeeded very well, despite the personnel acute emergency: The two number 1 goalkeepers Moritz Nicolas and Omlin will probably be out due to the end of the season, the actual number 3, Jan Olschowsky, had been borrowed from Alemannia Aachen in a lack of game perspective.

Three victories for the debut

Pereira Cardoso celebrated his Bundesliga debut on match day 24 at the 3-0 victory in Heidenheim when Omlin was missing because of the red lock. There was a substitution for the last 19 minutes on the 26th matchday when Omlin injured himself at 3: 2 for the Gladbacher – with Pereira Cardoso it became a 4-2 victory.

Also in the following 1-0 home success against RB Leipzig, the young Luxembourg, who has already played four A-internationals, remained in charge, only in 1-1 at FC St. Pauli he conceded his first goal-in the 85th minute.

Rank four in the Goalkeeper best list

With this, Pereira Cardoso had kept the first 283 minutes of his career the zero, which in the Bundesliga history brought him to all legends such as Kahn, Neuer, Illgner, Andreas Köpke, Jens Lehmann, Toni Schumacher or Sepp Maier.

Only three keepers had longer series without a goal at the start of their Bundesliga career: Timo Horn (2014, 1. FC Köln/456 minutes), Dirk Krüssenberg (1966, Fortuna Düsseldorf/310) and Heribert Macherey (1991, MSV Duisburg/295), followed by Bernd Leno (2011/Bayer Leverkusen/274).

18 out of 19 goal shots

“Tiago has made it outstanding so far”Seoane praises his young goalkeeper. “He has a great sovereignty, also masters the penalty area and the five -meter space. It is part of it that he has now gained a goal. He was very disappointed afterwards and also self -critical, but then coached the front people again in training and showed a good look.”

In fact, Oladapo Afolayan’s long -range shot did not look completely unsustainable, Pereira Cardoso could have taken a step to the ball if he had reacted earlier. Otherwise, he previously captivated with good reactions, kept 18 out of 19 shots in his three missions and did not let himself be blocked so easily in air duels.

Conversation with the school management

Pereira Cardoso has only been training with the professionals in the morning units for two weeks, because he also builds his high school diploma in the Mönchengladbach-Hardt comprehensive school. Sport is actually one of his Abi subjects, and Gladbach’s manager has already announced a conversation with the school management. Roland Virkus with a smile at the sports show: “The theory is okay, but maybe you can do without the practical exam. He shows in the Bundesliga that he can move quite well.”
