Handball record champion THW Kiel has done its homework seriously in the tight title race of the Bundesliga. Coach Filip Jicha’s team prevailed on Sunday at 23:19 (14:9) at MT Melsungen and kept the pressure on leaders Füchse Berlin and Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
Swede Eric Johansson was the best scorer for Kiel on Sunday with seven goals. In the table, the THW is still third (36:8 points) behind the Löwen (37:9) and Berlin (39:7). The North Germans still have a game up their sleeve. Melsungen conceded the fifth defeat in a row and remains without a plus point in 2023.
On Saturday, SG Flensburg-Handewitt surprisingly dropped a point. Coach Maik Machulla’s team did not get past a 27:27 win at Frisch Auf Göppingen after six wins in a row. With 33:11 points, the SG is now fifth in the table, four minus points behind the Berliners.
SC Magdeburg, the fifth club in the fight for the title with 33:9 points, is still challenged by promoted team ASV Hamm-Westfalen on Sunday afternoon (4:05 p.m.).
The German champions surprisingly lost to TSV Hannover-Burgdorf on Thursday and are looking to make amends.
