SC Magdeburg’s uncanny winning streak is broken: the Champions League winner has lost ground again with a 26:26 (13:13) against “feared opponent” THW Kiel after 23 competitive game wins in a row. With 34:2 points, the leaders in the handball Bundesliga are still heading towards the championship title.

One second before the end, Kiel’s Hendrik Pekeler gave the visitors a point. Last season, THW even won all three duels with Magdeburg, but now it was enough for a draw.

In the previous 30 Bundesliga games, Magdeburg had celebrated 29 wins and only dropped a point in the draw in Erlangen on September 20th.

Despite the respectable success, Kiel fell back to fifth place in the table with 26:10 points. The new fourth place is champions Füchse Berlin after a clear 36:28 (21:18) at HSV Hamburg. The Füchsen also managed to take revenge for their narrow defeat (38:39) against Hamburg almost two months ago.

In Magdeburg, in front of 6,600 spectators, it was back and forth from the start, even after the hosts took a 20:16 lead, the THW found its way back into the game and was ahead at 25:24. The SCM countered, but Pekeler had the last word. The SC last failed to win a competitive game when they lost to HC Veszprem at the Club World Cup on September 30th.

Before the game, the SCM announced the extension of the contract with Swedish national player Daniel Pettersson for another year. The 33-year-old has been playing for Magdeburg since the 2016/2017 season.
