Thunderstorms and hail expected, code yellow issued

After weeks of drought, it could rain in Drenthe tonight. Weather institute KNMI has issued the weather warning code yellow for Drenthe. ‘Thunderstorms with locally high precipitation’ are expected. Wind gusts are also warned.

The wind gusts can reach a speed of 75 kilometers per hour, reports the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. Precipitation may consist of hail.

Code yellow has been issued for the whole country, in Drenthe the warning applies from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The showers enter the Netherlands from the southwest, which then move further across the Netherlands. “Traffic and outdoor activities may be affected by this,” says the KNMI.

According to RTV Drenthe weatherman Roland van der Zwaag, it promises to be a damp day. “That can result in a number of strong showers regionally,” he says. According to him, the chance of showers is greatest in the southeast of the province.

“The line Diever, Assen, Drouwenermond and everything southeast of it; these are places where the most active showers can fall. Then it can just start pouring and only 10, 15 millimeters can come down,” says Van der Swag. “But they can just deviate at the last minute, but the showers prefer the warmest places, which is the southeast of Drenthe.”

The ANWB warns of slippery roads, now that the road surface is going to get wet again after weeks of drought. “A lot of rubber and greasy substances have been left behind by traffic on the dry and warm asphalt. When these stuck substances become detached from the asphalt due to rainwater, this can lead to treacherous slipperiness and less grip.”

Road users are advised to be extra alert on the road and to keep a sufficient distance from each other.
