Thrift store goes up in flames: arsonist receives compulsory hospital order

46-year-old Mark L. from Veldhoven set a fire on July 9 at the De Run industrial estate in Veldhoven and was sentenced to TBS with compulsory treatment on Monday. The court in Den Bosch determined this on Monday. The De Kempen thrift store was completely destroyed in the fire.

The fire spread from the thrift store to a building next door. A NL Alert was sent due to the heavy smoke development. A number of people in the area had to leave their homes to be safe.

The court rules that the man has various disorders and addictions and requires urgent treatment for this. If this does not happen, the chance that the man will make the same mistake again is very high.

The fire was a huge blow for the employees of the thrift store. De Kempen is a social company and many people work there ‘with a distance to the labor market’, as they say.

The store was closed for six months after the fire, but shopping has been open again since mid-January. In addition to the fire in the thrift store, Mark L. was also convicted of burglaries and other small fires.
