Three West Flemish people receive decorations for courage and self-sacrifice
Glenn Verbrugghe from Zedelgem rescued an elderly lady who had fallen on the train tracks. Piotr Nowak from Roeselare and Dimitri Viane from Nieuwpoort rescued a Polish man from a burning vehicle.
West Flemish governor Carl Decaluwé presented the civil decoration of honor to two men on Tuesday for an act of courage, self-sacrifice and charity. The third could not be present during the award ceremony.
Glenn Verbrugghe from Zedelgem rescued an elderly lady who had fallen on the train tracks on November 17, 2020 in Loppem. He was on the bus to pick up students when he saw the victim. Just before the blows went down, he was able to help her up. “Without your cold-blooded intervention, the woman would have been hit by the oncoming train,” the governor said.
Piotr Nowak from Roeselare rescued a Polish man from a burning truck in Mannekensvere on January 30, 2021. Piotr was working as a security guard in the parking lot when he noticed the fire. “Despite the heavy smoke development, you rescued the Polish driver who was unconscious. The man had already suffered burns to his feet,” said the governor. He got the help of Dimitri Viane. That lifesaver will receive a medal.
