Three suitable locations found for housing migrant workers in West Friesland

The number of labor migrants in West Friesland is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. In order to provide accommodation for foreign workers, 19 ‘preferred locations’ were mapped. Three serious options have now been chosen and are being further investigated: Appelschenkbos (the south side of the Hoornseweg), in the Stationsbuurt in Benningbroek and on the Grutteweide, near Wervershoof.

In the coming years, at least 3,000 accommodation places will be needed to accommodate foreign workers in the region. Research agency Sweco published last December a report outwards in which 19 ‘preferred search areas’ were identified as suitable locations. The agency did this on behalf of seven municipalities in West Friesland. Migrant workers can be temporarily housed at these locations, each location offers enough space for 300 people.

Common goal

Many migrant workers now live in places that are not suitable or intended for this. Councilor Jeroen Broeders says he is pleased with the many initiatives that have been received: “The initiatives now before us bring us closer to achieving an important shared goal: increasing and improving the residential and housing supply for foreign workers.”

If the municipal council approves the three locations on November 30, further steps can be taken. Local residents will be informed in advance.
