The goalkeeper position at FC Bayern is likely to be occupied for the next year and a half, provided Manuel Neuer doesn’t get seriously injured again. But what happens after summer 2025? According to Sky, three successors for Neuer are currently being traded by the Munich-based company.
Only recently did FC Bayern announce the extensions with Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich. The duo extended their working papers, which previously only ran until summer 2024, by a year to June 2025.
This means: The German record champions are well protected, they have the well-known number one in Neuer, who recently made a surprisingly strong comeback, and an experienced number two in Ulreich, who could step in at any time without worrying about those in charge.
But what will actually happen in the 2025/26 season, when Neuer is already 39 years old and will probably end his career? According to “Sky”, those responsible at Bayern are already strategically preparing in the background to sign a successor. As of now, there are apparently several hot candidates in the Munich casting:
- Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund):
The 25-year-old recently extended his contract with BVB until 2028. But according to Sky, the Bayern bosses are continuing to monitor the Dortmund goalkeeper. According to the report, the Swiss does not have an exit clause and would probably cost 50 to 60 million euros, which would make a transfer more difficult. But if the Munich team gets serious, the TV station says there should be a chance that Kobel will move to the record champions in 2025 or 2026. Kobel and Bavaria, that is “a hot story”.
- Alexander Nübel (FC Bayern/currently loaned to VfB Stuttgart)
According to Sky, the Bayern management team is impressed by how well Nübel is doing on loan in Stuttgart. He is expected to take on the role of new successor. However, Nübel’s contract ends at the end of June 2025. This means that the Munich team would have to extend the contract with the 27-year-old if he is really to become Neuer’s successor. The keeper should definitely be able to imagine a (further) future at FCB.
In addition to Nübel, Daniel Peretz, who only moved to Säbener Straße this summer and will probably (also) be loaned out in the future, is not out of the running.
- Mike Maignan (AC Milan)
The name of the 28-year-old Frenchman is not entirely new on Säbener Straße, and was played a few times by various players in Munich, especially around the summer transfer period. At the time it was said that Bayern wanted to loan Maignan, who is considered one of the strongest keepers in the world.
Now “Sky” is warming up the rumors at the time and reporting that the record champions are close to the Milan keeper and are closely monitoring the development of the 13-time national player. A transfer from Maignan is “not hot”, but those responsible have noted the name.
If Neuer’s successor becomes hot in the summer of 2025, Maignan would – as of now – be entering his last year of contract with the Milanese. The right time to possibly sell the goalkeeper to Munich. The current market value of the 1.91 meter tall goalkeeper, who comes from Paris Saint-Germain’s youth ranks and ended up in Milan via LOSC Lille, is estimated at around 45 million euros.
