TV‘Family’ kicked off the new soap season on Monday with a double episode that could count in terms of suspense. Afterwards, three characters were in prison, three had ended up in the infirmary and space had to be cleared in the morgue. Three marriages also seem to be on the brink.

The episode kicked off with a brand new opening generic, which looks fresh and super fast. Immediately after that, the soap picked up the thread where it had been left at the end of the season finale: in the boxing club. There Niko lay groggy and lifeless on the floor after his boxing match with Sam. Mieke’s husband was rushed to hospital, where he was kept in a coma due to severe brain injuries. Niko is therefore still alive, but it remains to be seen how he will wake up from his coma.

In the meantime, Veronique had also been admitted to the hospital. She had ended up in a lake with her car, but had survived the crash thanks to her lover Koen. It had dived fearlessly after her and rescued her from the sinking wreck. When Lars noticed that his adulterous wife was safe, he turned his back and disappeared into the darkness. Since then, the CEO of Wolff & Bos has been missing.
Veronique received a visit from Koen in the hospital, but she made it clear to him: “Lars is my husband and the only true love of my life.” To which Lars’ half-brother replied laconically: “But he’s kicked it now.” Just then the police showed up and handcuffed Koen. He will have to answer to the judge for the death of Léon, the kidnapping of Lars and maybe a lot more.

Brahim, Samira’s son, had meanwhile also ended up in hospital, albeit for an annoying but harmless procedure. However, he soon returned home, where Benny would propose to Samira in front of and with the approval of her three children. However, Benny’s newfound love was so overwhelmed and unconvinced of the right intentions of the proposal that she refused to accept it. Although it turned out a little later, after a good conversation, that she wanted to start a relationship with Benny again and not to move with her family but to move in with the handyman. All’s well that ends well? Not quite, because there is no longer a marriage. For now anyway.
In between all that drama, Quinten also caused a lot of misery and tears. Quinten had traveled to Singapore to secure mobile phones belonging to a criminal organization in exchange for a lot of money. When he returned, however, the villains had hidden drugs in his wheelchair. Quinten was caught at customs and is now behind bars. The death penalty hangs over his head, because in Singapore that is the usual punishment for drug offences. The misstep caused a lot of tears on the home front and especially with his wife Hanne.

Quinten had infiltrated that drug world through Guido, because he worked as a drug courier for the cocaine queen Mira, the manager of the Snax. Guido wanted to get out of the world and offered her one last deal: in exchange for a few bags of ‘lost’ drugs, he wanted to be left alone from now on. The drop would continue in a deserted place, where suddenly police showed up. Guido had alerted them. Mira wanted to shoot Guido, but a sniper prevented that and took Mira out. Dead. Guido already realized then that his part was over and that he would have to go to jail for his part. This immediately explained why Guido was suddenly no longer featured in the new opening credits after six years. He disappears in the cell and so out of the picture and therefore also out of the series.

Guido, Quinten and Koen in the cell, Veronique, Niko and Brahim in the hospital and with Mira one dead person in the morgue. The first episode of the 32nd season of ‘Family’ was not a babbling mountain river, but a churning sea in stormy weather. Because in addition to all those storylines, there is still one character missing: Lars. In addition, three marriages are on the horizon. Mieke discovered Niko’s affair with Sam, Lars realizes that Veronique cheated on him with Koen and Hanne now also knows that Quinten has been lying to her the whole time. Insights that cannot remain without consequences? So ‘Family’ started strong, because after this episode the series will never be the same again.
