The controversial community service turns out to be a flop. Only a ‘handful’ of long-term unemployed people had to do such work in the last two years. That ‘handful’ can be taken very literally. “I don’t know if there are three, four or five,” Minister of Labor Jo Brouns (CD&V) had to admit. However, more than 37,000 Flemish people are eligible. “This is culpable negligence on the part of the VDAB,” says MP Maurits Vande Reyde.
