Three days stuck in Nepal by rebels | To travel

Best memory

We took a cruise to Norway. There was only snow, not a green blade to be seen and it was minus 20 degrees. I stood on the deck in the evening and the nature and the mountains were so beautiful that I got tears of happiness.

Drama

We arrived late at night at a hotel on Bukit Lawang, Sumatra. At night we woke up from the itching: countless bugs walked over our bodies. First groundwater came out of the tap and then a large worm. Also the roof was leaking and we had to move our bed and suitcases otherwise everything got wet.

Airport

At the airport of Singapore, delays are not a big deal. You can use the swimming pool there for free, and if you have a long delay you can get a free tour of the city with a bus.

Fixed

We have been stuck in Pokhari (Nepal) for three days. The Maoists, the local rebels, had closed all entrances and exits of the village to tourists. With a very small plane we flew via the Himalayas to our next destination. We didn’t mind that much, because the view was beautiful.

Always with you

Mothballs to the tropics, a piece of rope, a world plug and a phrase book and map of the country.

Craziest eaten

In China we ordered the longest dish of the menu written entirely in Chinese. It turned out to be boiled animal entrails. It stank terribly, we quickly put the lid back on the pan. We also got fried chicken feet there once with the nails still attached, but we didn’t eat them.

meeting

We ended up with bad luck in a very small village in Cambodia and had to spend the night there. We walk there and it turned out that the population there had never seen white people. They kept touching our skin and pulling on my husband’s beard. Everyone followed us and when we went for a drink they stood in a large circle around us. It was amazing!

Advice

Learn about the customs of the country you are going to. And never panic! We got lost in Beijing once, but it always comes back. And don’t bring jewelry, you can be robbed so brutally.
