Threatening terrorist attacks: boy (17) gets community service

Because he chatted about terrorist attacks, a seventeen-year-old boy from Eindhoven was sentenced to 112 days in a youth prison and 200 hours of community service. He has also been placed under house arrest and will not be allowed to appear at airports or in border areas in our country in the coming years. The court in Rotterdam wants to prevent him from fleeing our country.

If the Eindhove resident makes the same mistake again in the next two years or does not cooperate sufficiently with the probation service, he will go to youth prison for a year.

The Islamically raised boy was sixteen when he was arrested at home by a special arrest team last May. Ammunition was found on him, among other things. That was confiscated, just like his computer.

‘High chance of attack’
The boy stated that there was a good chance that he would have committed an attack if he had not been arrested. The court concludes that society may have been spared a lot of suffering by the intervention of the Belgian and Dutch police.

A now 20-year-old Arnhem resident was also arrested at the same time as the boy. This man was sentenced to 84 days in prison and another 240 days if he commits another crime. The court found that his behavior could not be entirely blamed on him due to personal problems.

According to justice and the court, the pair contacted each other and others via social media and the internet in 2022 and 2023 about their plans for attacks. They allegedly discussed, among other things, attacks on nightclubs and police stations in Belgium.

They are also said to have exchanged ideas about purchasing weapons and explosives. Furthermore, there was serious discussion about joining the Islamic State (IS) to participate in the jihad, the armed struggle against ‘infidels’.

The court considers it so serious that the Eindhoven boy remains under the supervision of the probation service and must wear an electronic ankle bracelet. He is also not allowed to come into contact with extremist material and contact with Arnhemmer is prohibited.

Earlier last year, nine Eindhoven terrorist suspects were actually acquitted. In this case, the court found that it could not be established that they wanted to commit an attack. Up to four years was demanded. A number of suspects spent eight months in pre-trial detention.
