The season is over and for SV Darmstadt 98 the dream of the Bundesliga has come true. That’s why thousands of fans celebrated the rise of their lilies on Monday.
A large banner above the stage made the motto of Whit Monday clear: “In Darmstadt they say: Guuuuuuuuude, Bundesliga”. More than 15,000 fans came to Karolinenplatz in downtown Darmstadt to celebrate their team’s success: promotion to the Bundesliga. On the penultimate match day they had this with the 1-0 win against Magdeburg made clear ahead of time.
Even at this point in time, the Lilien fans from the city made a big party zone – the celebration continued on Monday. “The team has managed to create an identification with those who are the most important mouthpiece of a club and they are the ones who are all in blue and white down here – the fans of Darmstadt 98,” said the coach of Südhessen, Torsten Lieberknecht, moved on stage.
The team sign the golden book
Before the Lilien coach and his players went on stage, they had signed the golden book of the city of Darmstadt. Afterwards there were warm words from the mayor: “We cheered, suffered and celebrated with you. I congratulate you all on this great sporting success,” said Jochen Partsch (Greens).
The lilies have entered the Golden Book of the City of Darmstadt.
Especially the rousing and at the same time down-to-earth style of play was well received by the Darmstadt team and brought the team and fans together, Partsch continued. On Monday afternoon there was no doubt about this statement, because Karolinenplatz was completely filled with Lilien supporters.
“Proud of this club, these fans, this city”
For offensive player Tobias Kempe it was the second promotion celebration with SV Darmstadt after 2015. “I’m incredibly proud of this club, of these fans, of this city,” said Kempe and then he addressed the Lilien supporters: “You’ve always been there for us. Thanks to you, we’re here.”
Captain Fabian Holland also shared his thanks: “I try to absorb everything and carry it in my heart – just thank you, thank you to the team and thank you to the club.”
