Thousands of fans paid tribute to PSV late on Sunday evening at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven after winning the KNVB Cup. PSV beat arch-rival Ajax in De Kuip after taking penalties.
Joël Drommel became the hero at PSV. The often maligned second goalkeeper was PSV’s regular keeper in the cup tournament and coach Ruud van Nistelrooij also stuck to that decision in the final.
‘Drum is on fire!’
Some question marks were raised, but Drommel proved his worth in De Kuip. He played a strong cup final and stopped Edson Alvarez’s last Ajax penalty, after which Fabio Silva shot the decisive goal behind Ajax goalie Gerónimo Rulli. After the victory, his teammates put Drommel in the spotlight and sang to him: “Drommel is on fire!”
For coach Ruud van Nistelrooij, the KNVB Cup is the second prize he has won with PSV this football season. At the start of this season, he and his team also won the Johan Cruijff scale. This was also at the expense of Ajax.
Second
PSV can give the season even more shine by finishing second in the regular competition. In that case, PSV will also play in the preliminary round of the lucrative Champions League next season. PSV still has to compete against Sparta Rotterdam (away), Fortuna Sittard (home), sc Heerenveen (home) and AZ (away), respectively.
