At 7 am, the citizens’ movement Code Rood started its day of action with the aim of blocking the TotalEnergies site in Feluy (Hainaut). With the action, which was announced, the coalition demands the end of fossil fuels. Action is also being taken in Liège. Eleven administrative arrests are said to have been made in Feluy.

Divided into different groups, the participants of the action have strategically positioned themselves around the TotalEnergies site in Feluy and Liège. Their goal is a complete blockade of the infrastructure.

“The participants in this action are people like you and me who are denouncing the ecological and social disaster caused by the activities of companies such as TotalEnergies,” explains Jolien Paeleman, spokeswoman for Code Rood, who is present at the action. “TotalEnergies has made record profits in recent months in a context of the climate crisis and deep social misery, with families unable to pay their energy bills.” The activists put up banners calling on the French energy giant to “stop its neo-colonial fossil fuel mining projects”.

“Instead of getting caught up in discussions about climate debt and finger-pointing, the federal government should go after the real culprits of this crisis. Fossil fuel companies should pay for a just transition away from fossil fuels. New projects around fossil fuels should be The people in countries that have historically been the least responsible for the CO2 in our atmosphere but pay the highest price for the climate crisis should be compensated.”

Peaceful Gathering

“Observers from the International Federation of Human Rights , Amnesty International and the League for Human Rights are on site, as well as members of parliament, to evaluate whether the right to peaceful assembly is respected and protected,” it said.

It is the first action of Code Rood, a movement that receives support from many other organizations such as Greenpeace, Extinction Rebellion Belgium, Grandparents for the Climate and Peace Action.

Eleven people were administratively arrested for refusing to show their identity card. They are released sparsely as soon as they are identified. According to the public prosecutor and the police, everything is quiet and the action would end on Sunday afternoon.
