A few days after the derby win against Hertha, Union only drew 1-1 (0-0) in a friendly against Hannover 96.

Nicolo Tresoldi scored the opening goal for the second division side, who are still without a win in the league this season, in the 53rd minute. The late and not undeserved 1:1 equalization was achieved by Kevin Behrens in the 87th minute of the game. Shortly before that, Tymoteusz Puchacz had hit the post for Union (86′).

In front of 825 visitors in Berlin’s Jahnsportpark, coach Urs Fischer only used players who had hardly or not at all in the previous two competitive games in the DFB Cup at Chemnitzer FC (2-1 after extra time) and in the Bundesliga opener against Hertha BSC (3-1). had not participated.

The main focus was on Morten Thorsby. The new signing from Sampdoria Genoa, who has been struggling with a major training backlog, played for Union for the first time three weeks after signing his contract.

The Norwegian international was on the pitch for a good hour. Here and there the midfielder’s skill flashed. He could have put Union ahead with a header just before the break. But goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf made a splendid save (42′).

The game started more than 15 minutes late because the train from Hannover 96 did not arrive in Berlin on time. The game took place in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in the city center because there are currently construction measures for planned home games in the Europa League in the stadium An der Alten Försterei in Köpenick.

In competitive international matches, UEFA prescribes warm-up zones for the substitutes on the side of the main grandstand. Therefore, the concrete between the coaches’ benches and the baseline has to be replaced with artificial turf.
