After the embarrassment of the German record champions at VfL Bochum, Thomas Tuchel talks about his team’s performance – and makes a surprising statement.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel canceled the obligatory press conference after his team’s sensational 2:3 defeat at VfL Bochum. FC Bayern apologized to its coach because they still wanted to get the plane back to Munich.
Tuchel had previously defended his team’s performance in an interview with DAZN. “I don’t think today’s defeat was fair,” said Tuchel. “I think a lot went against us. I think we had an expected goals value of 3.4, and we had four, five, six completely top-class chances and completely dominated the game.”
Bayern then “fell behind out of nowhere, never gave up, never stopped putting in the effort, and then played outnumbered. So today a lot went against us. I feel the defeat today is different than the last two , this is not deserved.”
Instead, his team showed an improved performance: “The ‘how’ is crucial. We were extremely unhappy today, which is why today’s 90 minutes are different from the second half against Lazio and from long stretches against Leverkusen. Today was a bit of Murphy’s Law for us. Anything that could go wrong has gone wrong.”
“Yes, I’m disappointed”
Bochum “used the break to shake themselves up. I think that can happen. Overall, we performed differently today than in Leverkusen or against Lazio, where I had the feeling that we were missing the last gear for an entire half .”
He doesn’t blame his players. Tuchel emphasized: “Yes, I’m disappointed because I think if we play the same game again, we have a high probability of winning.”
The chance of winning the championship is “not that realistic right now. But last season we believed in it until the end and were rewarded. And that’s why we will continue to do so. But the prerequisite is that we get back on track .”
