Thomas Tuchel is negotiating a contract extension with Chelsea FC. “There are talks,” confirmed the 48-year-old before the Premier League duel on Sunday (3 p.m.) at Leeds United. But these are still in the early stages. The contract of the former Bundesliga coach with the Londoners runs until June 30, 2024.

“But I think given the situation where we come from and where we are right now, in the middle of the transfer period, it’s best that I focus on my team and that we’re competitive,” added Tuchel. He could feature at Leeds despite the penalty following his heated argument with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte. Because the ban on a game by the English Football Association was initially suspended on Friday until the coaches’ statements were available and evaluated. The Blues can also appeal. Tuchel has also been fined £35,000 while Conte has to pay £15,000. “I hope this will be my last red card of the season,” said Tuchel. “I crossed a line that I shouldn’t have crossed as a coach.”

The former Mainz and Dortmund Bundesliga coach has been on the sidelines at Chelsea since January 2021 and won the Champions League with the team in his first year. So far, Tuchel has looked after the Blues in 94 games, in which he scored an average of 2.12 points, which equals his haul at BVB. After the difficult previous season, also due to the sanctions against the then Russian club owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea started the new season with a 0-1 draw at Everton and a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
