Things are not going well for BVB at the moment. Bayern’s Thomas Müller dares to make a prediction.
Thomas Müller no longer sees Borussia Dortmund as a serious title contender in the current Bundesliga season. “I don’t think Dortmund will still be fighting for the championship on the last matchday this season,” said the veteran from record champions Bayern Munich to “Sport Bild”.
In fifth place, BVB is already 15 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen at the halfway point of the season. There is recognition for the performance of coach Xabi Alonso’s team, “but nothing more,” said Müller: “We have big goals and can continue to become champions on our own. Our focus is on our own game. We want to become champions. That’s the only thing that plays a role in my head. We’ll see how Leverkusen fares.”
“We have to prove the rest in the second half of the season”
Müller does not see FC Bayern as the top favorite in the Champions League. “Of course we are doing quite well at the moment, but we still need a few more horsepower to win the Champions League title,” said the 34-year-old. Basically, you have the prerequisites to be at the forefront in Europe: “No more, no less. We have to prove the rest in the second half of the season.”
There are already a few other candidates. “To be honest, after the triumph in 2020, I already thought: We can’t be stopped for the next two or three years. At least so that we’re knocking on the doorstep every year. It felt like this: Who’s going to take us with that? “Stop the team from doing that? Unfortunately, that hasn’t been confirmed.” But he doesn’t currently see a team that is completely above the others in Europe, like Manchester City was in the previous season.
