Hertha BSC only averted relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga in the relegation second leg against HSV. Ex-Bundesliga professional Thomas Helmer does not currently believe that things will get better for the capital club in the new season.
Hertha BSC fans have to be prepared for a relegation battle in the 2022/2023 season, says Thomas Helmer in his column for the “kicker”. The former FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund defender “didn’t have the impression that it was a team”, although the Berliners “learned” from the 1-0 defeat in the first leg. Felix Magath’s team won the second leg 2-0.
Helmer continued: “I still doubt that the club will turn around now. Fredi Bobic has a lot of work ahead of him, he certainly imagined the task to be easier. One problem: the expectations are higher than the potential.”
Capital rivals Union are currently “clearly number one in the capital”, after all coach Urs Fischer’s team finished sensationally in fifth place and will therefore play in the Europa League in the future.
Helmer was “disappointed by Hamburger SV, he had the psychological advantage on his side and didn’t use it. In the end, there was a lack of quality on the pitch, four years in the second division left their mark and cost substance”.
Helmer: HSV must appear “as a unit”.
If Helmer has his way, HSV will have to be “in the top management as a unit” in the future, which is the only way the proud northern club can “get back up. Because even without Schalke and Bremen in the league, promotion in 2023 will by no means be a sure-fire success”.
After all, HSV President Marcell Jansen spoke out on Monday for consistency in the management bodies of the second division. “We have given both board members absolute confidence,” said the ex-professional in an interview on the club’s website, adding: “Without a doubt, we will pool our energy and make a new start together.”
Most recently, differences between sports director Jonas Boldt and acting board member Thomas Wüstefeld were reported.
