This year, work will be done on ‘death road’ N9 to make the road safer

To make the N9 safer, Rijkswaterstaat will start working on a number of measures this year. New signage and markings will be installed in various places. Work on the road will also continue next year: the intersections will be tackled, among other things. The N9 is one of the most unsafe roads in the country.

For years there have been calls for measures to not only make the N9 safer, but also to ensure better traffic flow and that the Noordkop more accessible is becoming. Some measures have been taken, as was the case a few years ago a section control between Sint Maartensvlotbrug and Burgervlotbrug and were there this summer traffic controllers at the intersection of Sint Maartensvlotbrug. But more remains necessary, and that will come.

Zebra crossings

This involves ten measures, according to Rijkswaterstaat know. New signage and markings will be installed in various places this year. This includes signs showing the maximum speed and priority rules, and markings at zebra crossings and stop lines.

Next year, the intersections for pedestrians and cyclists in Sint Maartensvlotbrug and Burgervlotbrug will be tackled. “The crossing points for walkers and cyclists are not clear, unclear and too tight, which means they cannot position themselves safely,” said Rijkswaterstaat. ‘Additional designs are needed for these intersections, so that the adjustments actually lead to a safer situation.’

Kooy Bridge

Rijkswaterstaat indicates that it is now working on this with the contractor and is coordinating the work with the municipality of Schagen, the province and the village councils. ‘There are also similarities with the work that at the Kooy Bridge are going to take place. Therefore, the implementation of these measures on the N9 will require careful coordination with the parties involved.’

The N9 is in the top ten most unsafe roads from The Netherlands. There were five fatal accidents and 84 casualty accidents on the approximately 40 kilometer long road between 2017 and 2021. There were also several (very) serious accidents on the N9 last year and this year.
