The federal government’s core cabinet will meet again tonight to discuss the budget. It is not clear whether an agreement will be reached in the course of the evening or night.
The top ministers of the federal government have already completed several rounds of negotiations on budgetary controls. The theme was also discussed during a meeting of the core this afternoon. It is unclear whether the negotiations will now go to the finish. According to one source that was a possibility, elsewhere there were doubts.
As you know, the government received a windfall from the Monitoring Committee a few weeks ago. The deficit for this year would be 3 billion euros lower than estimated in October last year when the budget was drawn up. Traditionally, the government has to look for money for some additional expenditures through decided policies, such as for the reception crisis and the fight against drugs.
However, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo wants to do more and make an extra effort. The French-speaking left, however, is not in favor of this. A track in which a further increase in minimum pensions and benefits would not be implemented is “imbuvable” for the socialists.
