“This smells like an old problem”

On the 3rd match day of the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund gave up a victory against Werder Bremen that was believed to be secure. After a crazy final phase, in which the North Germans scored three goals in six minutes, BVB had to admit defeat 2:3. The press about the game:

kicker: “Memorable final phase: Werder shocked Dortmund in six minutes. When Raphael Guerreiro had made it 2-0 for Borussia Dortmund with a powerful, albeit not unstoppable shot, Werder Bremen seemed beaten despite their courageous performance. But Ole Werner’s jokers had something against it.”

Picture: “The comeback of the year. Werner’s golden hand makes Werder celebrate. In the 89th minute, Werder’s guest appearance in Dortmund was still 0:2 – the game seemed to be over for Bremen. But then Werder turned within six minutes (!) the game and won phenomenally 3:2. There hasn’t been a comeback like this in the top five European leagues for 13 years. It’s amazing!”

South German: “The Werder miracle of Westphalia. Dortmund could have been warned, but even if they weren’t, such an embarrassment should not have happened to them in their sacred home stadium. BVB lost at home after a 2-0 lead last suffered 40 years ago.”

FAZ: “Instead of celebrating their third win of the season, they are struggling to regain their composure at BVB: In a dramatic final phase, Borussia Dortmund still gives away the win against Bremen. That smells like an old problem. That sounds suspiciously like the good old BVB problem that is behind hidden in the overused terms ‘attitude’ and ‘mentality’, which appear in the headlines at some point in every BVB season.”

Mirror: “A miracle in salmon. Neither the coach nor the players could explain the spectacle – the North Club was the better team.”

RTL: “Werder madness! A game for a football team couldn’t be more bitter. Borussia Dortmund lost to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga after a 2-0 lead. The completely crazy story: Werder only succeeded in the 89th minute Goal, Bremen scored twice more in injury time!”

ntv: “Werder Bremen is writing Bundesliga history. With an unforgettable race to catch up, promoted Werder Bremen defeated the champion candidate Borussia Dortmund – and thus even secured an entry in the history books of the Bundesliga. Because what happened in Dortmund has never happened in Germany’s top division given.”

Ruhr news: “As spectacular and extraordinary as Werder’s late comeback was, the victory was okay. Bremen was better, in the end the runners-up didn’t even have the ‘basics’, admitted captain Marco Reus self-critically. That raises questions. Has BVB felt too safe due to the coherent results of the first games of the season? Are the sloppiness and laissez-faire, two well-known weaknesses of this team, not yet driven out by the new coach Edin Terzic? Where were the greed and the power as the recognition value that the team wanted to distinguish itself with?”

WAZ: “What a drama: BVB lost a 2-0 lead against Werder Bremen in the last few minutes. The list of defects in Dortmund is long.”

Weser courier: “This Werder team is electrifying. With the emotional victory at BVB, Werder Bremen showed impressively what the newly promoted team is capable of in the Bundesliga. And it was the opposite of a happy success.”

dyke room: “Again and again the eyes went to Ole Werner’s hands. No, even after this incredible 3-2 spectacle at Borussia Dortmund, the skin color on his fingers hadn’t changed. It really wouldn’t have been surprising if the head coach of SV Werder Bremen was there would have shone a little more than before, because the touch that the 34-year-old showed in this away game was more than just golden.”
