This rent index is better than no rent index at all

The rent index ensures transparency, and that helps landlords and tenants, says BZ editor Hildburg Bruns

From Hildburg Bruns

Even if the rent index had to be created differently due to legal disputes (from existing statistics instead of surveys of tenants and landlords), it’s good that it’s here now.

Time was pressing. The courts had clearly signaled to the Senate that Berlin needed a new table. With appropriate and realistic values that create clarity for tenants and landlords. This way, both sides can see how much room there is for increases.

It is important that the landlords in particular also accept the new figures – and do not take the alternative route with three comparable apartments in the event of increases. The rent index is much more transparent and possibly saves tedious processes.

It is also to be hoped that the tenants will not immediately receive letters with increases – just because it is possible.

However, in times of higher interest rates and more expensive maintenance, it is almost impossible to avoid rising prices for housing. However, the last increase must be 15 months ago.
