Frits Wester became very emotional during a broadcast on NPO Radio 1. When son Auke tells a special anecdote from his youth, the RTL Nieuws star cannot hold back his tears.
RTL Nieuws journalist Frits Wester was recently a guest in the nightly radio program of Mischa Blok and there he let his tears run free. When the presenter starts an audio message from his son Auke Wester, Frits can no longer contain himself. He is not even able to talk any further.
Back to Cambodia
Auke recalls a special childhood memory in the message. “I remember one of my best friends at primary school on a Monday evening in Drenthe standing at our house in tears.”
What happened to that child? “He had just been informed that due to a difficult home situation he would be sent to his father in Cambodia to live there within two days. A country he had never been to. And that just before the end of group 8. Just before the moment when everyone would go in a different direction.”
“Thanks, Dad”
Frits immediately took action. “You went to his mother that evening and offered her that he could come and live with us for the rest of the school year. Something I didn’t ask of you, but you introduced yourself.”
Dan: “I was only 12 years old and I don’t think I ever thanked you for this, even though I know you didn’t do it for me. Unfortunately, she declined your offer. You can’t always be the hero in every story, but here – in this story – you were for me. Thanks, Dad.”
In tears
Frits is then unable to say anything. He is very emotional. Mischa: “Yes… That’s sweet, isn’t it? This is your son, Auke.”
Frits: “Yes, I remember…”
Mischa: “He tells it very beautifully. I love how he says he looks like you.”
Frits: “I have two fantastic sons, Jelle and Auke. Two real brothers who really do things together. I think that’s fantastic to see. (…) It does something to me.”
At the end of the broadcast, Frits becomes emotional again when it comes to his deceased mother.
