This prevents you from accidentally ending a call | Tech

When you’re in the middle of an important phone call, you don’t want to accidentally hang up. With these tips you reduce the chance of this happening.

Accidentally ending a phone call is usually caused by accidentally touching the screen in the wrong place or pressing the power button. Most smartphones have the option to end a call and reject an incoming call via the side button. Fortunately, something can be done about that.

Accidentally hang up on your phone screen

Your smartphone usually turns off the screen automatically as soon as you hold your device to your ear. There is a sensor in your phone that detects your proximity. It can sometimes happen that the screen becomes active after all. As a result, you may accidentally tap the screen and you may unintentionally hang up the call.

This can have several causes. The sensor may be dirty. Cleaning your device can then solve the problems. You may be using a case that doesn’t fit your phone perfectly. The sensor, which is located in the upper part of your device, may be (partly) covered by this.

There may also be a software problem. This can often be solved by restarting your smartphone. All processes will then be restarted, rectifying any problems. In addition, it is important to install the latest version of the operating system on your device. These types of updates fix any software problems.

Accidentally hanging up using the side button

Many smartphones have the option to end a call via the side button. The button can often also be used to reject an incoming call. Because of this function, it is not necessary to take your device (completely) out of your pocket or bag to refuse or end a call. Very handy, until you accidentally end a call. This is how you switch the function on or off on iOS and Android devices.

iPhone

Apple introduces a new setting in iOS 16 that allows you to disable the side button to end a call. Open your iPhone’s settings and go to ‘Accessibility’. Tap “Touch” and toggle “Prevent lock to end call”. Please note that switching it on also ensures that you can no longer reject an incoming call with the power button.

Android

On Android phones, ending a call with the power button is usually not set up automatically. If this is the case or if you have ever set this yourself, you can change it in the settings. You’ll generally find the feature under ‘Accessibility’. The exact steps vary slightly by brand. For a Samsung device, go to ‘Interaction and dexterity’ and tap ‘Answer and end calls’. Finally, turn ‘End call with side key’ on or off.
