Taxi transport in Breda is not good, says the municipality. In recent years, many complaints have been received about ride refusals, usury prices and unfriendly drivers. The municipality is now going to take control and comes with new rules.
“Anyone who steps into a taxi in Breda at an official taxi stand should be able to count on a safe, honest and hospitable ride,” says Alderman Peter Bakker. “Research and experiences from recent years show that unfortunately this is not always the case. We want to tackle this.”
In 2019 there was already a special quality mark in Breda to improve taxi transport. That was established because even then there were already complaints about hospitality and customer -friendliness at Breda taxi companies. In turn, the taxi companies complained about drivers from outside the city who, for example, could easily get a temporary pass during busy events such as Carnaval and Breda-Jazz and thus work in the city.
Over -rates
Six years later, the situation is not yet as the municipality wants. The quality mark set in 2019 will disappear again. Instead, the municipality comes with stricter requirements to get a permit such as a more extensive exam and a clear code of conduct. Abuses are also punished. If drivers refuse trips or calculate too high rates, according to the alderman, this must be strictly tackled. What that means in concrete terms still has to take shape.
With this approach, taxi transport in the city must become ‘more reliable, friendlier and clearer’. The new rules will take effect from the beginning of 2026. Drivers will then have six months to meet the new requirements.
