This means freedom for you: ‘Breathe carefree and be yourself’ | Home

READER COMMENTSWhat does freedom mean to you? We asked that question to our readers. Almost two hundred responses, from large to small and from general to personal. Below you will find a selection of them: from small works of art to concise texts, and from photos to completed front pages.

1. Sleep safely

Freedom: no big worries for tomorrow, but go to sleep safely without fear and then get up rested!

2. Breathe

Being able to breathe carefree and be yourself.

3. Responsibility

The basis of everyone’s life. In freedom, the good always arises in man. However, freedom does mean responsibility. Being allowed to say something freely doesn’t mean you have to say it. Freedom comes with responsibility, otherwise things will go wrong.

4. Detach from trauma

That future generations can break free from the traumas that our parents experienced as children and that also partly shaped us, the second generation.

Caroline van de Burgt, Heerde

5. Believing in God

I can and may believe in God, without having to pay attention to whether a car stops. Or that I am talking and have to fear for my safety. This is a great asset. But again of course. That is why we have to remember that things were different during the war… In Ukraine we see that things can be different just like that.

Dick Bouwmeester, IJsselmuiden

6. Retirement

Freedom for me is now that I’m retired! Being able to organize your own time, don’t have to do anything, do what you feel like!

Astrid Vercraeye, Emmeloord

Astrid was one of the readers who sent us a photo of what she had written on the front page of the May 3 newspaper. Curious what else people sent in as a result? Check it out below.

7. The door is open

That you can do whatever you want and the door is always open. Freedom = happiness.

Daytime activity ‘t Dijkhuis, Bathmen

8. Freedom as a woman

As a woman you can and may be yourself, become what you want, do what you want, have your own opinion and express it, be safe, not be at war or oppressed, be free in your religion.

9. Dissenting opinion

You are allowed to have a different opinion. In this country you are allowed to have an opinion, as long as you have the same opinion as just about everyone else. If not, you will be pushed into a corner.

10. Dancing and balancing

Freedom is like dancing on a tightrope.
Balancing to the other side.
Freedom is not a bullet, but the word.
Freedom is in everything, the promised land.
