New cars will receive a different license plate series during the course of this year, with a different order of numbers and letters. The first license plate from the new series will have the combination GBB-01-B.
The new sequence of letters and numbers is now the eleventh license plate sequence to be seen on Dutch cars. The first (ND-00-01) was introduced in 1951 while the last (one letter – three numbers – two letters, or G-001-BB) dates from August 2019. In 1898, the Netherlands was the third country in the world, after France and Germany, to decide to introduce a license plate. The first license plate had the number 1. It was only a few years later that a system with license plates per province was introduced.
RDW does not announce the exact date of the new license plate
The last license plate issued for a passenger car in 2023 was X-609-RJ. This means that the irrevocable end of the current series is approaching. It is not known exactly when the new series will start. The RDW does not make any statements about this, partly to prevent car buyers from waiting for that moment.
Officially end of June
But according to Jasper Verweij Kenteken.tv the first license plate from the new license plate series will be issued in mid-June. The actual switch moment is officially expected before the end of June, but because the RDW normally never lets the series run all the way to the end, the government agency will probably opt for this now for the new series called ‘sidecode 11’.
Gray license plate already ‘over’
The new combination has already been introduced this week for vans, pick-ups and all other vehicles with a so-called ‘grey license plate’. They switched to a new license plate series called ‘sidecode 12’. The first commercial vehicle with the new license plate is a Ford Transit Connect with license plate V-01-BBB. The ‘old’ series also ended with a Ford Transit, then with license plate VZZ-99-Z.
BBB not prohibited
The BBB license plate is striking, according to license plate expert Jasper Verweij. Because BBB is apparently not on the list of prohibited license plates, while this is the case with other political movements. And we’re not just talking about the NSB. VVD, PVV and SGP are also taboo. Other prohibited combinations include GVD, KKK, KVT, LPF, PKK, PSV and TBS. In principle, there are no vowels on a license plate, so no words can be made with the letters. The RDW also does not use the letters C and Q, because these letters look too much like a zero.
