Using artificial intelligence, a YouTube user took on Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” and recreated Ledger’s performance without make-up in his video. The video, uploaded by the YouTuber named “GdaTyler VFX”, digitally recreates the late actor’s face in various scenes of the 2008 superhero film using deepfake software. On the left of the video you can see the original, on the right the work recreated using special effects.
Watch the deepfake video here:
As reported by “NME”, the video was published on March 30 and has already reached over 14,000 views. However, the YouTuber himself notes that the replica is not perfect. As for the eyes, “some extreme left-right directions wouldn’t have worked as well as looking up,” while in some scenes the makeup lines show through.
More about deepfakes
“Deepfakes” are fake photos and videos using artificial intelligence. The people processed with it can then be seen in deceptively real-looking, manipulated image, audio or video recordings. A prominent example: Recently, the picture of the Pope wearing a white winter down parka went viral – everything about it is “fake”, but for a few days social media users believed the picture to be real. The clarification understandably caused some trouble in the comment columns of Instagram and YouTube posts. Examples like these once again demonstrate that artificial intelligence can also pose some dangers and diminish the credibility of any published videos and news.
Ledger died of an accidental drug overdose in January 2008 at the age of 28 before the film The Dark Knight hit theaters in July of that year. The next Batman film will be director Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, in which Robert Pattinson will once again play the role of the Dark Knight. The sequel is slated to hit theaters in October 2025.
